Sabar is a traditional dance that has its origins in the Wolof culture of Senegal, West Africa.

Danced to the sabar drum for all kinds of celebrations - from the arrival of a new baby to naming ceremonies and weddings, as well as for healing - sabar is a dance full of joyful appeal.

The teacher

Oumy Mbaye has been dancing since the age of 15 and has danced sabar around the world - including a stretch in Germany as part of the phenomenal Afrika! Afrika! circus troupe.

She's been living in Leeds for 11 years and travels to London regularly to teach. We're trying to persuade her to start a sabar class here in Leeds. If you'd love that too, be sure to let her know!
